| Anthony
Gormley's "Another Place" (also known as "The Iron Men
of The Mersey") have been granted persmission to stay. |
| |
Sefton
Council have finally seen sense and have granted the statues
on the beach at Crosby permission to stay. The Council
have averted a situation that could have seen them become
the butt of "bureaucracy gone mad" jokes for
years to come, by allowing the 100 plus statues to stay
on
the beach.
The Council had threatened to send the statues packing
when their original term finished in the autumn of 2006,
but were thwarted by the efforts of local people and
Another Place Limited who
have been fighting for the statues to stay.
We at NLP
Liverpool Ltd are delighted by the decision to keep this
wonderful installation. The statues are an
extremely photogenic and inspirational art work (take
a while to
sit and watch as the tide comes in and washes over them),
and they
have drawn more people to visit the beach at
Crosby
in the last two years
(over 600,000) than have visited in the previous ten.
We are constantly delighted to see more people visiting
our local beach and enjoying the beautiful and ever changing
views over the estuary and the Irish Sea, and these statues
will help to keep Crosby on the art world map.
With the approach of Liverpool's year as European Capital
of Culture in 2008, it would have been insane to have
allowed these statues to go, and so we applaud the decision
to keep them where, as Anthony Gormley himself has previously
stated, Crosby beach is the best setting for these statues,
we look forward to many more years enjoying them. |
